I got one of my 4/8GB DDS-2 DAT drives for under $20 on eBay and the other
one was given to me. I can get 1.3/2.6GB DAT tapes for $2.99 and 4/8GB
tapes for $4.99. I'd hardly call that expensive. :)
Now, granted, both drives are SCSI drives, but I've had several Adaptec
2940-U/UW cards given to me, so those aren't a problem.
