I have seen this behavior recently too (sorry to reply to such an old thread),

I went to check the log just now and it is there but only has entries for
today in it, other times it does not exist at all till FE runs and it will
re-appear with only the latest entry in it, I have no sceduled log trimming
software running and just archive the logs manually about once per month,
so I'll read on to see where this thread leads :-).
