There will be a rash of lawsuits against the New York City police dept. and
I suspect it is going to cost the city a great deal of money to settle
them. With a Republican mayor, you could expect no less, although I would
have expected the police leaders to have known better.

On the other hand, they learned how to bend the law under Giuliani in his
efforts to cut the crime rate. That cost the city a bundle too. Not that
many cared about bending the law and the reduction of civil liberties.
People were too pleased with the drop in crime. The same kind of stupidity
and cowardice is what you are seeing now concerning 9/11 and the lessening
of civil liberties that has brought about.

Appealing to the public's fears seems to work well for the contemptible
Republicans, but we all suffer the consequences in the long run, including
Republican supporters whose own liberties are cut along with everyone
else's.
