doing now because you are speculating it will be doomed to failure.

The New York Times speculated man would never succeed at heavier than air
flight about 1 or 2 years before the Wright Brothers flew.  Many liberals
speculated like John Kerry that the Soviet Union and communism could never
be defeated without mutual nuclear destruction.
