Press Release

ESA addresses international teachers' conference
================================================
5 December 2002

The European Council of International Schools (ECIS) recently invited
ESA to its annual conference to present a workshop on the role of
astronomy and space technology in teaching science. Present at the
meeting were 3700 teachers from international schools worldwide.

The ESA workshop took place before the ECIS conference, which was held
in Berlin, Germany at the end of November. Entitled Science for the
New Millennium: Astronomy and Space Technology in the Science
Curriculum, the workshop gave a team of ESA education specialists an
opportunity to present some of ESA's educational products. These
include the ESA/ESO Astronomy Exercise Series for 16 to 18 year old
students, a pilot initiative from Human Spaceflight for primary and
middle schools, and opportunities to hold live interviews with ESA
astronauts. Many teachers also visited the ESA stand where they were
able to have an overview of some of ESA's science missions and discuss
classroom applications for ESA material.

The ECIS annual conference provides an opportunity for educators
throughout Europe and beyond to discuss all aspects of education, and
to share and discuss new developments and possibilities in education.
Founded in 1965, ECIS is the largest association of international
schools and serves students of more than 65 nationalities from a wide
variety of cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds. Members
include publishers and distributors of books, and makers of
educational equipment, as well as 430 institutions of higher education
and education-related organisations.
