Well, you could wire up one end's DTR to RI the other - but I don't know of
any BBS or other comms program that looks at the RI signal anyway.  Most
look for incoming RING and then go ahead and answer (usually, send ATA),
but most will respond positively to a positive carrier detect (DCD) signal.

So, one end raises DTR, the other end sees DCD.  Drop DTR, the other end
sees carrier drop.  You might need to send 'RING' as the dial string from
one end, to get the other to try answering .. but most will just go on DCD,
possibly requiring to see a CONNECT string from the 'modem' thereafter.
