 Revisiting this:

 The attacks on and from Lebanon led me to consider something
 else. For a long time I have read that the real reason the fundy
 Christians in the US support Israel is that they believe the
 restoration of Israel will bring on the last days.

 The way the last days were supposed to play out was Israel was
 to be invaded from the North, which was always interpreted as
 Russia. Only now they are fighting in Lebanon, which is north of
 Israel. While Lebanon is not near strong enough to invade
 Israel, Syrian and Iran just may believe they are. With the
 complicity of Saudi Arabia and other Arab States, the dangers
 may not be illusory. Jordan has a large Palestinian population,
 and Saudi Arabia is the home of the most militant Islamic
 factions.

 The only thing standing between Iran and Israel is Iraq, and our
 occupation is a bit troubled there. With the Iraqi Shia inclined
 to Iran, and the Sunnies looking for an excuse to get rid of out
 forces, that may be enough.

 It doesn't really matter if the combined Arab forces really have
 the power to take Israel, what matters is if enough think the
 attempt will bring on biblical intervention. Seems that's the
 goal of both the Religious right in this country, and Al Qaeda.

 IOW, wonder how much the administration is supporting Isreal in
 the expansion of the fight, or how much the religous fundies are
 convincing Israel that the US supports them, to try to force the
 end times. The ultimate end would be the end of Judaism, but
 exploiting Israel in that way would not be beyond them.

 Some in this, both Christian and Islamic extreme conservatives,
 would like to push us to the intervention by God. They want to
 force God's hand, whether they realize it or not. We've seen
 this before, and it always ends in disaster. Just my view of it.
