Depending on how much you want, you can use anything from a wooden box
planter along a well lit wall (Florescent lights will take care of the
lighting needs) to a few little round planters.
Caution note: If you have pets, be careful in the types of herbs you plant.
Some of tem are edible to humans but not to cats and/or dogs. The dogs you
can deal with by using smaller planters in the windowsils but if you have
cats, you know that wont work with them. Your local library or your famuly
vet probably can give you a pamphlet on which ones to avoid for your
situation.
Now for what to grow. Mint does a lovely job of completely taking over a
planter box. Fast growing and dang near unkillable. If you give it plenty
of light and a little fertilizer, it may exceed 2 ft tall and be very bushy.
If you plant it outside, it will be there forever.
For smaller needs, you may want to get some seeds or cuttings from another
herb grower (or the local store) and start them in little egg cartons. Just
a few per egg-hole. Transplant the good seedlings to another container once
they have taken off well. Consider: Majorum, Parsley as good ones for this.
