Jason...
JH{at}> I guess you dont sleep next to your computers like I do :d
It used to be that:
"Do you Sysop, take this BBS, to be your lawfully wedded spouse?".
"To love, honor, and cherish, until crash do you part?".
"Well, it's in the bedroom, but I'm the one getting screwed".
When my late wife and I had to move to a different apartment in
the complex where we resided (had to, due to remodeling), I planned
to have the computers in the front room, and the futon/bed in the
back room. There's only so much you can put in a 960 square foot
apartment.
She was a "night owl", so if I wanted to go to sleep early, she
could play on the BBS from her computer, without disturbing me.
However, she was narcoleptic, and many nights, fell asleep in her
chair, and the BBS would log her off for inactivity.
Let me tell you, when I've been awakened by thunder, I move like
a fireman going to a conflagration, rushing around to shut down,
and unplug everything!! No amount of surge protection, lightning
arrestors, etc. will protect you from a direct lightning hit. I've
heard too many horror stories from users, Sysops, and fellow amateur
radio operators...some who spared no expense for this "protection"...
and it was all for naught. The strike still blew out everything they
had.
After her tragic, untimely death 15 months ago, I decided to stay
where I was...especially since I'm now fully disabled...and to
continue the BBS in her memory. She had promised to do likewise, had
I passed on first...so it's the least I can do.
