I'm using a Zip Drive and OS/2 supports it just fine. I'm using FAT on
the zip disks, but I understand that there's an update that allows HPFS
on removable media.

I used to backup by dual booting into DOS, then booting OS/2 off
a floppy, running EABACKUP, booting back into DOS, and then using
Norton's backup to backup the drives. To restore I would restore
everything back into DOS, boot OS/2 off the service disks, use
EARESTORE (the other part of EABACKUP) to restore the EA's, and then
I'd dual boot into OS/2.
Since I'm using HPFS now I can't use this procedure. Now I use LH32
to compress each drive and then use the OS/2 backup command to backup
these archives to Zip Disks. It's a bit of a hassel and you loose the
ability to easily select files to backup or not (for example, I now
backup my 50 meg swapper.dat file) -- but it's free.
JF> I guess I should also ask about using the PCTools 7.1 defragger,
JF> COMPRESS. Is anyone using this from a DOS Dual Boot session?
Can't comment on that -- I used Microsoft's Defrag and Norton's speed
disk with no problems. I have an HPFS defragged that came with
FM2 Utilities, but haven't used it since HPFS resists fragmentation.
