subject: Swapping Turntables

My mother-in-law latched onto an old Morse console stereo at a garage sale
last week. She's in love with this thing, and wants the phonograph to work.
"Spare no expense" is what she said. She paid $40 for it. I told her these
boxes were made to look at, not listen to.
It has a BSR changer on it, with a ceramic cartridge. I doubt if these
dinosaurs are still available since BSR has long since gone out of business.
The turntable is very badly gummed up, and the drop-spindle rotates when I
turn
the turntable manually. I believe they were designed to have the spindle
remain stationary. The motor is unable to turn the turntable, that's how
badly gummed up the thing is.
I'm thinking of ripping out the old turntable entirely and installing a more
modern automatic turntable, maybe a single-play unit. This would also mean
adding a preamp for the magnetic cartridge.
One other thing I'm thinking of is throwing in a couple piezo tweeters, since
this unit has NO highs and lots of bass. Any suggestions from anyone?
                                Phil
