KR> Do Tel$tra have any plans to convert their exchanges
KR> over to a digital PCM network of any sort

RS> Thats essentially what it is already between the exchanges with the
RS> vast bulk of the inter exchange links now fibre optic and hence digital.

RS> Its digital right at the line card in a modern digital
RS> exchange, the only analog is on the copper pair to your house.

AM> Unfortunately there can be be a Digital - Analogue - Digital
AM> conversion at the exchange because Telstra didn't have the right
AM> equipment to put in a direct digital link between the exchange
AM> interface to a RIM or RCM and the AXE / S12 switch at the exchange.

Oh sure, I wasnt attempting to describe all the configs that are
seen, just pointing out to him that his idea that its currently
an analog network has not been true for quite a while now.

Be interesting to see whats causing the problem with Dave Hatch
and if its due to some bodgy kludge up like that thats doing it.

Corse its more likely that his continuing level of snide remarks
about Telstra and Austel has seen someone deliberately choose to
put a device on his line to stuff up his comms on purpose |-)

AM> This extra D - A - D conversion will stop V.34 modems
AM> from achieving 28800 bps at reasonably low Bit Error Rates.

True. Have you ever seen a decent freq response graph done
Courier/Courier thru a link like that ? Be interesting to
know that it actually looks like on one of those.

That USR approach really is a hell of an advance, essentially being
able to measure the line properly with the modems, tho currently
there is some weird glitch which means that the results are a full
6db different right across the spectrum if there is either an M34F of
Viper on the other end. Joe Frankowitz (USR) answer on that wasnt very
helpful as to why, looks suspiciously like he hasnt come across it.

RS> The Coalition promised big changes on ISDN pricing etc, it
RS> remains to be seen what gets delivered on those promises tho.

AM> Hint: Alcatel's Liverpool factory is quite busy enough as it is, without
AM> having to produce RIM-ISDN gear at twice the currently planned rate.

Maybe, but its just those sorts of promises that really do
shake the system up, as PayTV itself has in another area.
