The new code to work around the hypothetical problem is now in CVS, for
anyone who wants to try it right away. I'll try to put together a new full
release soon.

I'm still troubled by my inability to see how the problem might arise in
practice, but the new code is simpler and cleaner anyway, and should be
immune to this kind of problem.
