KP> I probably could throw away about three chainrings and never miss them.
KP> But I do use all my cogs.
DH> On my "touring" bike, I usually never come off the middle ring. I,
I probably am on the middle ring of my touring and hybrid about 95% of the
time and on the small ring about 4% of the time. Guess how much use I get on
the big one. If I have a strong tail wind or a good down hill I make myself
use the big one rather than coasting. On my road bike I probably am on the
small one about 99% of the time (wishing I had a smaller one about 4% of the
time). The next road bike WILL have a triple, even if it isn't de riguer.
DH> Now, whe I go visit my brother on Lake LBJ, I tell a different story!
DH> Those sharp hills have me switching gears like crazy! My legs are NOT
DH> used to hills, at all, so I tend to use up some gears up there.
One of the problems with the touring bike is that it is equipped with bar-end
shifters and the force required to move the chain up to the large chain-wheel
is major . . . and that much torque on the extremity of the handles at the
speed where I want to shift onto that one threatens a diversionary type fall
of major proportions. I probably need to see about getting them changed out
to integrated shifters.
