subject: 28.8k on Telstra line

G'day Arthur,

Once upon a time, Arthur Marsh spoke thus to Tony Molina:

TM> What is happening is that modem speeds up to 14.4k work
TM> fine, but going the next step to 28.8k is no good. I get
TM> good reliable 28.8k connects (V42/LAPM) but then there
TM> are pauses of varying lengths between screen displays
TM> from the remote modem. The pauses get worse and worse
TM> and usually, within 2 or so minutes it hangs up,
 TM> "click". NO CARRIER.

AM> Can you try forcing V.34 at a lower speed e.g. 14400 bps?

Hmmm, does this mean that V.34 14400 bps is different to V.32bis
14400 bps?

I will try it though.

AM> Some modems have retraining disabled by default (not a good idea), and
AM> therefore V.32bis 14400 bps may work fine and V.34 with initial
AM> connect at 28800 bps and retrains disabled may mean that (eventually)
 AM> the link disconnects.
AM> Are retrains enabled at both ends of the link?

The sysop (Melbpc BBS) have Netcomm M34's.

He has just told me in email that the modems there are

"Set to the default - %E1 Enable auto-retrain."

My SimpleModem defaults to %E0 (Auto-retrain off) but I will
change that to %E1 as soon as I log off here.

Thanks for your reply.

adios
