In the past, the Athlon MB did need an AMD _approved_ power supply.  I was
told by hardware vendors, that some power supplies cut corners and were
not purely in spec.  And while they worked fine with the pre-Athlon
motherboards at the time, they had poblems with the new Athlon
motherboards.

I believe AMD actually had a page of approved power supplies.  You may
wish to check their site out for any new information.

Whether this is still true or not these days, I haven't heard one way or
the other.
