1990 was a completely different situation.  Iraq had invaded Kuwait.  The
USA (and numerous other countries including a number in the middle east)
were legitimately reacting to that.

Two additional comments.  First, there was a tremendous number of false
accounts (babies being thrown out of incubators is the quintessential
example) used to foment support for the invasion.  The veracity of those
accounts is irrelevant because Iraq had invaded a soverign country ... that
was the instigating factor in the 1990 attack by the coalition against
Iraqi forces.

Second, in the "what would have happened if only ..." parallel
universe: what would have happened if only the coalition forces had
continued through to Baghdad and then overthrown Saddam at that time?  My
feeling is that the chaos in Iraq which we are seeing now is exactly the
sort of chaos that would have happened then.  The US and its coalition
partners made the right decision to end the war when they did.  Iraq was
defeated, contained and presented no threat to the region or the coalition.
 That situation, as documented by Blix, continued up to the present day.
