SB>A friend of mine out in Arizona had to do some work on the Navajo rez.
SB>She talked about getting "really strange" directions; like, "You'll come
SB>to a house with a old woman sitting on the porch." She said, "What
SB>happens if the old woman is going to the toilet while I drive by? I'll
SB>never find the place." Luckily, the woman wasn't; and she did find it.
i remember getting directions like that from an indian in
arizona! he said, "drive down the road until you come to a silver band."
a silver band? here in nj, we call it a guard rail! :)
this definitely illustrates how cultures think differently. these
directions are based on a visual experience, whereas "go down 3 blocks &
make a left" is more of a map-based direction. usually there's nothing
particularly visually striking about a block--ya seen one, ya seen 'em all!
