The dbx 2:1 method was extensively used in commercial audio too.
And I'll bet the specs are better than the home box, since they
were put just in front of the head amps on multitrack tape decks.
Somebody somewhere has gotta be selling one.
From phone books at the library you could probably write to
audiophile dealers around the country to see if they traffic in
used gear. There's a shop here in town that does. I don't
recall seeing a 2:1 expander, but they had a 3bx expander a while
back. If you write enough shops, soon enough one's gotta turn up.
