In general, AT&F (reset to factory defaults) goes first. Most

modems aren't too fussed about parameter order - but later parameters

may affect earlier ones. A simple example for you: AT&FS37=5 tells

my modem to reset itself to factory defaults - including 'connect at

full speed' (14.4k) - then tells it to connect at 1200 baud.

See above. AT&F gives you a definite starting point to 'tweak' from.

Dataplex 225's are made in Australia. You should be able to run it

with just AT&F. If you like to get some feedback on its workings

as well, try AT&F&C1&D2X3.

Translation:

AT&F = reset to factory defaults (your manual should describe these).

&C1 = set 'received signal detect' to follow the *other* modem's signals,

so if the *other* modem quits, your modem will know about it.

&D2 = tells modem to 'hang up' if *your* computer stops sending its

'ready' signal to the COM port for some reason (eg: you quit the

       comm program while still on-line)

X3   = ignore the 'dial tone' (on phone line), report a CONNECT {speed}

message when connecting, or a BUSY message if 'engaged tone' is

       detected.

NB: a lot of phone lines don't support high speed modeming. Mine barely

manages 14.4k. Telecom only guarantees 2400 baud on residential lines!

JB> I'm starting to think it's one of the black arts!!

Hmmm, we were discussing voodoo as a solution to phone line problems

a few weeks back.... :)

good luck, Fraser
