Hi Shelia,

I don't know what you can do for such children. These are the

So we are not perfect and 100% of the school population are not either.
Historically this has never been so and never will be. Even though
Australia has always had some of the highest literacy rates in the
world there are some children who will have missed out through low
intellect, illness and lack of opportunity. I have a parent who I helped
to find some adult literacy classes this year. She had correspondence
lessons but every time it was time for classes her father would get the
children to help with the fishing nets - a spasmodic education. In
Queensland, the state controls education (federal money is given). We are a
large geographic area and some children live in far remote places. Children
have historically been given mail lessons and school of the air on old
radio/flying doctor frequencies. These days they are entering the
communication super highway.

I didn't think we were - just thrashing out perspectives.

Most of mine are keen.

I agree. We are in a lower socio economic area. Most people are triers and
want their children to behave and do well but some just don't know the depth
of the effort they have to put in with reading to their children, talking to
their children and being a good role model.
SK> since I am well aware that good readers do better in ALL subjects
Absolutely and those that are really reading by the end of year one are also
the ones who had good auditory memory, knew which way around a book went,
had been read to when they came in that door on day one. Language was
already important and granny had probably been telling them that they would
learn to read when they went to school.
Bye,
Erica.
Any little child who can say my name will do well at school!!!!
... I never said I could type...
