NetComm Enhances SmartModem Range with new Digital SVD

Sydney, NSW - 23 February 1996 - NetComm Ltd has released the sixth

generation of its award winning SmartModem range which includes

breakthrough functionality with Digital Simultaneous Voice and Data

(Digital SVD), enabling users to send data and voice over the same line.

The new Digital SVD feature is an Australian first for NetComm, a move

designed to reinforce its market leadership position, according to Peter

Townsley, NetComm's chief operating officer.

"Targeted to professional users, these enhancements underpin NetComm's

ongoing commitment to provide best of breed solutions to our growing

corporate and government customer base," said Townsley.

SmartModem 288D

With new Digital SVD functionality, this model allows users to

simultaneously speak to the person they are sending data to over the same

line.

Digital SVD operation is seamless and can originate in one of two ways:

users can call one another and converse as usual, then drop into Digital

SVD mode when they launch a communications application; or users initiate a

modem connection and the modem drops into Digital SVD when the handset is

picked up or the speakerphone is engaged by one of the users.

In this way, Digital SVD allows PC users to do two things at one time,

increasing communication and productivity in these key areas:

   * Interactive file sharing with conversation;

   * Online support for PC's over the telephone line with simultaneous step

     by step voice explanation and diagnostics;

   * Visual display of product photographs or electronic business card

     while talking to customers;

   * Enhanced use of interactive games.

Digital SVD requires no special data communication software. Standard

applications such as Cooee, ProComm Plus or PC Anywhere are able to

transmit both voice and data which the SmartModem 288D.

Cooee or MacComCenter data and fax communication software is included with

this model.

VoiceFX for Windows 95 is also provided and enables the SmartModem 288D

user to send and receive files quickly while talking on the same line

without starting complicated communications or remote control programs.

A host of new security features include Outdial Disable, Dial Stored Phone

Numbers Only and enhanced DES Security for environments where confidential

data should be received by authorised users only. Password Expiry, Download

and Upload of Security Database features have been enhanced.

This model also supports full error correction and 8:1 data compression

enabling 230.4 Kbps throughput.

SmartModem 288

Designed for professional use, the new high performance external 16-bit V34

SmartModem replaces the existing SmartModem M34F and, apart from Digital

SVD functionality, offers the same features as the SmartModem 288D.

Pricing and availability

SmartModem 288, RRP $799; SmartModem 288D, RRP $899. All prices include

tax. Both models will be available in March.
