Thus, on 6 Oct 96 at 5:54 PM, that Clark Ray said to Chris Smith:
CS> AFAIK, Joe Gastwirt remastered all of them [_CTA_ through _GH II_]
CS> before Columbia issued them on CD. My copy of _II_, purchased about
CS> 3.5 years ago, mentions "Digitally remastered for Compact Disc by Joe
CS> Gastwirt at CBS Records Studios."
CR> Yeah, mine says that too, but it needs to be done again, as far as I'm
CR> concerned. They've learned a lot about remastering since then. Look at
the
CR> remarkable work done with the old Genesis and Yes albums.
I was rather upset with the remaster of _Three Sides Live_... Atlantic
__left out the fourth side__!! [All the studio extras from the _Abacab_
and _Duke_ sessions.]
The original CD issue [which I was fortunate enough to get while it was
still available] wasn't that bad, and neither were _Abacab_ or _Lamb Lies
Down..._, for that matter.
CS> Some of that poor quality you mention had to do with the original
CS> analog master. Unless you're a genius, like Alan Parsons ,
CS> you're not going to recover that much more sonic quality from ancient
CS> master tapes.
CS> [Of course, in the case of the "Ballet For A Girl In Buchanon" suite,
CS> the lower quality intro. of "Make Me Smile" may have been intentional,
CS> since the quality picks up dramatically when Kath comes in on the track
CS> following the horns/drums/bass lead-in, and remains good throughout the
CS> rest of it.]
CR> Hmm, yeah, that is true. By "Now More Than Ever," the sound is better.
CR> Still, I don't like the sound of the opening song either, "Movin' In."
True; that track has the same fuzzy quality on the horns. Again, it may
have been intentional, as was Walt's _horrid_ off-key sax solo on that
track. 8)
