There are several companies investigating medium-bandwidth coverage of
urban areas using low-orbit satellites. Multiple uses, including pay TV,
but the intended main use is high-speed net feeds for areas where telcos
don't feel it worthwhile to lay FOC. But I agree the current MDS is not
suitable, as it stands.

Uhh.. equipment is depreciated, land is amortized, resources are depleted
[#undef ACCOUNTANCY_PEDANT]. But according to the crap the carriers feed
us, they are constantly replacing equipment. The fiber-optic stuff is too
new to have been depreciated yet.
