Jason...
Since this is the C echo, I'll give you a C answer... Most changes that
have taken place with compilers in the past 5 years have been in pursuit of
the ever-changing C++ standard. The C compilers have changed little, if at
all. What few people realize is that when they throw the C/C++ switch -
either on the command line or from the GUI - they're actually invoking one
of two separate compilers. In some compilers it may be more obvious than
others, but it's still true of all of them.
I own all of the major C/C++ compilers, and the "most powerful"
(more on this in a moment) C compiler I have is an incredibly obsolete copy
of Zortech C/C++ 3.0r4. Even though Zortech was bought by Symantec which
subsequently got out of the C++ compiler business, this is still the most
stable, fastest, and most ANSI-conformant compiler I own.
Now for the disclaimer... "Most powerful" is a relative term.
What's "best" is equally subjective. What works best for me
depends to a large degree on what sort of work I use it for. Although ZTC
works best for my personal stuff, at various clients and employers, I've
made other choices because they were the "best" for those jobs.
In my current day job, I'm using MSVC++ 1.5 - more specifically, the MSC
8.00c C compiler that comes with it, because it was the best for the job.
