Artists are usually only paid for finished, accepted work. If he wanted to
be paid for his time on unfinished, or unaccepted work, he should have put
that in the contract. Same with revisions. Where it's the same as buying a
loaf of bread is that you don't pay the baker for his time on loaves you
didn't buy. If you didn't put together a written contract with your artist
spelling out a compromise between what each of you thought was fair before he
started, then you now know why that's a good idea.
