CARL BOGARDUS spoke of Piaget to DAN TRIPLETT on 09-10-96
CB>I noticed you quoted many references for me to look up -
CB>unfortunately the vast majority of educational research is very
CB>poorly done and statistics can be bent to prove almost anything.
CB>Right now I don't have time to research the particular references,
CB>but I will keep them for future reference.
I really didn't reference them for you to look up. I just wanted to
offer some documented support to what I was saying. I don't understand
how you could disregard Piaget since his views are so widely accepted.
And your criteria for dismissing him as a light reference doesn't make
sense to me.
CB> DT> Piaget is highly regarded and his views are widely accepted by
CB> DT> early childhood educators and researchers. His contribution to
CB> DT> the understanding of how children learn and construct knowledge
CB> DT> is _foundational_ and is both supported and expanded by
CB> DT> subsequent researcher. Piaget is referenced in nearly _every_
CB> DT> early childhood textbook and his ideas appear in many
CB> DT> professional articles. Hardly a
CB> DT> light reference.
CB>
CB> DT> Piagetian yours,
CB>When an educator says to me, "Well Piaget says--", I want to grab
CB>that teacher and ask them if they have any thought independent of
CB>Piaget! That is the reaction I got when I read his material.
Of course we have. I hardly ever think about him or his work. But he
has contributed some important concepts regarding how children learn and
his ideas have been largely accepted in the educational community.
Certainly researchers have embraced his work. He certainly has
contributed to our understanding of cognitive development.
CB>
CB>IMO, he deals with children in general statements covering a wide age
CB>range-however I don't view students as "fitting" into Piaget's ideas
CB>of what happens when and how they think. They are individuals, not
CB>little pieces of a puzzle.
CB>
CB>Yes, I know he is referenced in most educational textbooks-but that
CB>doesn't mean I have to agree with him.
Then you sit with the minority. Are you an early childhood educator.
If not then your statements are understandable.
Cognitively yours,
Dan
