Hi Hamish,

[Thus spake Hamish Moffatt unto Steven Anderson:]

HM> Who ever said there was no such thing as a rabid USR zealot?

HM> For once, I would like to see you admit that Rockwell do something
HM> better. Every Rockwell modem made since 1993 has CallerID, so I don't

Yep, Rockwell is better here in that it has caller-ID on-chip.

HM> know how you can be proud over the fact your USR only needs a
HM> daughterboard upgrade for the same. Yes, you have your DSP solution

Sure, the caller-ID mod is for daughterboard-using Couriers only but the
mod *isn't* done on the daughterboard but on the motherboard itself. You
don't need to replace your daughterboard. Furthermore, the mod only
involves soldering two small (and inexpensive) components onto the
motherboard. Those with the technical know-how (not me) can do it
themselves, although they would be risking their warranties and the
Austel approved status of their modem.

HM> allowing flash ROM upgrades to higher speeds, but Rockwell users
HM> accept that and pay CONSIDERABLY LESS for their modem as a result.
HM> With some of the cheaper brands, you could almost buy a 28.8 now and a
HM> 33.6 later for the same price as one USR Courier, AND end up with two
 HM> modems in the process.

Dunno about this, Couriers are about $650 these days and you'd only get
two shonky generics for about this price. You certainly can't buy two
Netcomms or Banksias although you might be able to buy two internal
Spirit Vipers.

Oh well, people get their utility from different things. I guess I'm the
Courier kind of person.

Sunny
