JB> Take care,
I will, thanks, John. I'll begin by observing, although it seems to be
intended that I walk into some kind of trap, what you have set forth must
surely be recognized by you on second thought as a non-sequitur as long, wide
and deep as the Grand Canyon.
An open secret, John. Even though whether or not ANYBODY says it, our
knowledge of final reality is by definition partial.
This does nothing to hinder action or moving with the greatest wisdom we
can muster in political action. It only dictates that we maintain a healthy
humility. I just said in a separate post on the ineffectiveness and
perplexing, helter-skelter manner in which we execute the death penalty,
allowing some equally guilty murderers to be free from it. I said that I,
personally, oppose this kind of finality by the State although I understood
the impulses of those who see nothing wrong with it or even celebrate it.
In the United States today both the Federal and the State governments have
removed FAR more individual freedoms than was EVER necessary or called for
(the details are more fitting to be discussed in POLITICS). In a complex
society a degree of regulation of business is not at all out of order and
according to the philosophy of Adam Smith in HIS age would even be applauded
by him.
Philosophy in the political realm is NOT a nailing down of ideological
principles once and for all as THOUGH we really DID know the dimensions of
final reality but an ongoing pursuit by the forces actually driving the ship
of State to accomplish the "greatest good for the greatest number."
Even though your question to me did appear to me to be an egregious
non-sequitur I've done my best to give you a studied response.
Sincerely,
Frank
