Scott,
I am not sure which telescope Jerry Logan had with him this year at RTMC
but the Newtonian-Maksutov that he brought with him to the Optics Workshop
in Bellingham in 2000 was one of the Sarrafian design of the type that you
will find discussed in ATMT-V1. The prescription for Jerry's is a scaled
down version of the one shown there. The specifications for this
particular one of Jerry's scopes are as follows:
C.A. Clear Aperture of corrector lens 5.0" R1 - Radius of first lens
surface 9.5532" d1 Corrector Thickness 0.5059"
R2 Radius the second lens surface 9.8432" B.A. Back Aperture of
Corrector Lens 5.052" d2 Separation of lens and primary mirror
28.795" R3 Radius of curvature -55.909"
Dm Diameter of primary 5.682"
EFR Effective Focal Ratio 5.5
Jerry mounted his diagonal 6.0" inside of the corrector lens.

For those of you who remember the first few years of the ATM list you will
likely remember Bob Pfaff. Bob and Jerry are very close. Bob's life took
some twists and turns and he dropped off the list to attend to other
matters. The "pro optician friend" friend that Bob sometimes
would defer to in his posts was of course Jerry Logan. Both Bob and Jerry
have always been good friends to me and I have enjoyed hanging out with
them on the occasions when I have been fortunate enough to travel from
Seattle to Big Bear for RTMC and sincerely hope that they are both are
doing well. While Jerry is a professional optician he is indeed the
consummate amateur telescope maker. If you look at the proceedings for
RTMC over the entire scope of the conference's existence you will see very
few years that Jerry is not a merit award recipient. (Those times are
usually when he is involved with a more complicated telescope making
project that takes a little longer than he is able to complete in a year.)
I remember thumbing through an old S&T, circa 1957, and there was a
very young Jerry Logan standing by his first award winning telescope at
Stellafane as like an 18 year old.
I think Jerry is perhaps a little intimidated by the web and even email, so
unless his wife or children have brought him into the fray since the last I
saw him a couple of years ago, he remains unplugged. Too bad, as I dare
say there are few ATM's alive with more tales to tell and information on
telescopes to give out than Jerry.
Part of the fun with Jerry is just being around him and joking with him.
Jerry spent his years as a boy in Scotland before his family immigrated to
the US in his teens. He is very humble and bit shy with those that he
doesn't know, but if you happen by his camp at RTMC, listen for the
Scottish accent, and engage him with question or two about telescopes, his,
yours or any, and be prepared to pull up a chair and learn a fair amount.
He's a very fine human being and a great TN.

Regards to all,
Randy Johnson

Frank,

Gerry Logan received an RTMC Merit award in 2002 for just such a design
(i.e. subdiameter Maksutov corrector.) I have some pictures if people want
them posted.

Does Gerry Logan have a web site?

Scott
