they put it next to the shift key!
i think what i was hearingwas a shipping beacon. apparently they send out a 
cq (or v v v ) and a series of frequencies they are listing to.
that answer thanks to another post who i most regrettably deleted the letter 
before recording the name.
i am not yet a cw nut. i do have my 5wpm (a tech plus here) and am working 
very hard for my higher speed. i am trying to go straigh for my 20 because i 
am afraid if i get my 13 i will stop there.
the code those beacons were sending was way too fast for me.
