If you are sending it direct, then there's no issue with encryption - I would 
have thought.

Really? The so-called "privacy" issue or something else?

I don't believe it has any place in an amateur hobbyist network context, 
quite apart from the policy4 implications (no privacy law implications in 
Australia, btw).
