I don't want anyone to think that I'm knocking their taste. as the romans (or
someone) had it, "de gustibus non disputandum est". (I learnt that as an
example of a gerundive - which I can't say I really understood). "About
taste, it is not meet to be disputed" - literally. That said, I'm not a great
fan of Branstons, which i find too rooty and too crude in flavour. I also
find it's too acid. I'm no great pickle freak except that sweet & sour
gherkin recipe I put up some time ago. I do, on the other hand adore
utneys.

I would try it as writ, and see how you get on with it. If you like it, then
by all means quadruple it next time around. As I said, it ain't my favorite,
but with Helen and Eleanor both keen to find a recipe, I just up and done my
duty!
However, my real reason for writing is to give you a BIG thank you. When we
got back from our Hols, what was waiting for us but a lovely package. Now
I'll be able to make all those recipes with allspice in again. the
snickerdoodle recipe tempted Jacquie (so maybe she'll be making some soon. I
was also tickled by the coffee beans. Tell me, did they have a spicy scent
when you put them in, or is it the propinquity (now there's a REAL snooty
word) of the allspice that gives them that lovely smell?
Thanks a whole bundle, Ruth.
All the Best
Ian
