Hmmm.  Definitely sounds like stress to me.  You might try some TM.

As Peter F. could inform you using more earthy language, laughter is caused
by dissonance between a visual image conjured up by the words of the joke
and the more analytic and symbolic conception extracted from the words.
It is a left-brain / right brain thing.

So, ironically, our hypothetical split personality would not have laughed, both
because he wouldn't have "gotten" the joke, and also because he
would look silly
if he did laugh.
