That's the problem with trying to manage the scientific process too closely.
If we said in the 1960s that we wanted to put money intended for cancer
research into developing transistorised circuits, then almost certainly the
trustees would have refused. However today every single cancer research lab
is equipped with a computer, often providing an absolutely crucial role.
