I dont know what you class as a third world country, but we regularly visit The Gambia, West Africa ex British colony, going away from the towns and villages most homes have a transistor radio, if not homes substitute community, I know The Gambia is not as poor as some countries but anyone who's been there and travelled away from the built up areas will tell you how important a radio is to the everyday life. Slightly different subject, I remember a few years ago getting a train out of Tunis, capital of Tunisia, North Africa. About 30 miles away from Tunis the train was passing through some scrub land and we passed what I would describe as a lean to type of wooden shack roofed with grass sods, they had a television aerial.
