WP's Programmers' Editor (ED.EXE in its default filename) isn't
as defunct as you might think. It came bundled with my regular
copy of WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS. They are now bundling it,
instead of charging separately for it. It wasn't anything new,
however. While it had a newer date, it was exactly the same as
shipped with a version of WordPerfect Office (version 3, maybe?)
a couple of years earlier.
Yes, I too have used it to patch/modify HP LaserJet bit-mapped
font files, and it has worked great. I also use it any time I
don't want to be bothered with limitations on line lengths. I
really haven't taken the time to figure out what TSE is doing to
my data file when I get the error message "Long lines split,
press ", but I am always afraid that it is doing
something nasty and unpredictable. I have this problem
frequently, when I am trying to patch PostScript files that have
embedded (or consist of) Adobe Type I fonts, in which the font
outlines are coded in some sort of binary/hex code which is not
ordinary, readable, ASCII, PostScript code. These lines are
very long, but no one reads them anyway. I'm not sure what
happens if the line lengths are changed.
