subject: USR 33.6k & 56k upgrade

Hello, I have the old buggy USR 33.6k modem, ROM version 3/6/96 and I
have been using the following AT commands with some success:
AT S12=0 S2=128
this seems to "cure" the bbs hang problem, although sometimes there is
still a slight delay. If you aren't going to download anything, you can
try AT&K0 which turns off data compression and I have noticed no delays
with this one.

On the upgrade front, I recently ordered the 56k $7 upgrade, for
Sportster owners (who bought their modems last August to Jan 4th) and
the salesman said the 56k problem had to do with the circuit board and
not the chip. So they will send me a brand new modem with a new
circuit board and 56k chip along with a pre-postage-paid package to
ship the old one back in, I just need to include a slip of paper with a
customer order number to identify it coming from me. Pretty sweet
deal, get a brand new modem for $7 shipping :-)

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had heard of any problems with the
newer (read recently shipped out) 56k modems with the newer circuit
board? I guess there is always AT S15=128 to disable the v42.bis but
hopefully the newer ones, and the one I will be getting, will be bug
free.

Any hints on how I can test out my new modem to check for bugs? I know
there is a free 56k line you can call somewhere to check that feature
out, but how about checking the datacompression routines? Thanks, and
I will let you know when I will get my modem, I ordered it midday on
7-29-97, and they said one to two weeks.

Again, this refers to the USR Sportster 33.6k and 56k modems.
