the OS didn't install that printer... an installer did... it sounds like
there's something else going on...

1. did it install for CUPS use or LPR?

2. does your user have printing permissions?

3. is your user a member of the printing group if there is such a thing?

4. is the printing subsystem started during the system's boot sequence?

#3 comes from the situation where some configurations even go so far as
requiring users to be members of the sound group to play sounds thru the
multimedia system... this is similar to where users have to be members of
the fax, scanner or even modem groups to use those facilities...
