Can't really help you with the above. The only thing I can suggest is to
make sure that you don't have any IRQ conflicts and use hardware flow
control.

You can use a comms program that provides modem lights such as TX, RX
etc on your screen. Examples of such programs include Procomm Plus for
Windows and WinComm Pro.
