People have done both single and dual seating arrangements of the Dob
variety (usually as an equatorial setup can get rather interesting!) and I
remember one at Stellafane that used a pair of hand drills to drive the
chair around.
Balance it so that when you're sitting in the chair, the forces are close
to neutral but tend to go back to the normal position (you don't want to be
dumped out if the gearing goes bonkers!) and provide positive drive to the
system in both directions.  Also provide a kill switch at the hand so that
you can, at the least, stop a wild motor from running you in circles for
hours.
