It takes away the problem of the serial interface, and buries it in a
sealed black box - that won't malfunction due to software error.

You can have the luxury of input streams buffered in kilobytes - and
interrupts are things that are dealt with by systems programmers somewhere
in the murky undergrowth of the computer jungle.

Believe me - it's worth it.
