Just a line to the list on the progress of my two mirrors I am
grinding. I am working two thin mirrors at the same time. One
10x5/8",.. and one 9x5/8".... Both are at 9micron.. I spent extra
time on 15mic
since I found alot of little "stars" on the surface when looking
in the sunlight with magnifiers. I will
now clean my two tools and start with my last grit. Both mirrors look very
spherical and so far so good.
I have my Ronchi/Foucault tester ready and have my testing stand made. One
question, these are plate
glass mirrors at 5/8" thickness. Should these be tested vertically so
that gravitational stress does not
show wrong readings? It seems as though this would be the best way , but
looking down from a ladder
trying to look at ronchi lines seems like too much.. What about a mirror
at a right angle in-between
to change the direction of observation?... Uh, Oh,.. I guess this is not
good since the mirror reflecting
the image would change the image and you would not know if it was the glass
being tested or the glass
being looked through.. Anyway I will probably prop it up on the stand that
I made. To bad we can't use
the Space Station in zero gravity to test telescope mirrors, no stress in
the glass, just in humans..
I will keep all informed on my sucess, yes,
sucess.. I don't plan to fail, but if I do You on the ATM list will be the
first to know!!! Thank you all for support and information..
