I don't know if there are any good books on the topics.  Perhaps  amore
general modem guide might be better suited?  With init stings, there aren't
very many rules, except a couple of commands must go at the end of a sting,
or be a string by them selves.   ie with ATD to dial, if you had that in
the middle of an init sting, nothing after D would ever reach the modem.
