I think it's ironic that, as you say, Tom, Disney is so bound in family
and apple pie, etc.  Did you notice that in virtually every Disney movie,
one or both parents is evil or dead, or dies within the course of the
movie?  Stepparents are evil.  Etc.
As for the Amos'n Andy, one of the issues raised by the forwarded post the
other day was that blind people could not possibly copare fighting against
stereotypes of blindness with those facing blacks, because we could not
know what it was like to be black in America.  I suspect black people who
are blind could discuss this rather well -- and incidentally, I find it
interesting that anyone would think that because in his opinion a
particulr minority is more oppressed than another, this hierarchy of
oppression denies us the right to address our oppression, or any
oppression for that matter.
The results and effects of the oppression may are the same: rampant
unemployment, misinformation, violence, and both subtle and blatant forms
of discrimination daily.  At least larger minorities have the sheer
numbers which keep their issues in the media.
I have always found people who are in marginalized groups to be far more
understanding of our issues than others.  I don['t think this is an
acident.
Incidentally, in that same forward, the gentleman discusses a director of
state services for the blind who did not believe blind people could handle
stairs.  Hmm -- wonder where he got that idea?  Reinforced stereotype
comes to mind, falsehoods and misinformation continued at the expense of
the blind.
