CB> The following news items are from _Teacher Magazine_, August 1996.
CB> "The Jefferson County, Colo,,, school board has fired Columbine High
CB> School
CB> teacher Al Wilder for showing his students the R-rated film, "1900,"
CB> by
CB> Italian
CB> director Bernardo Bertolucci. In announcing its decision, the board
CB> cited
CB> the
CB> teacher's pattern of tardiness and leaving his classes unattended,
Being that tardiness, much more a "pattern" of tardiness, would get any
kid in most high schools suspended, I find it even harder to feel sorry of
Wilder.
CB> "Mr. Wilder should have known that administrative approval should be
CB> obtained
CB> before the use of an R-rated film containing nudity, sexual conduct,
CB> drug
CB> use
CB> and violence," the board said in its resolution dismissing the
CB> teacher.
This film couldn't be shown uncut on broadcast TV, because the FCC says
that material with nudity and sexual conduct isn't suitable for kids.
When this film couldn't be shown to kids (on TV), is it suitable for kids
in a compulsory classroom setting?
I think the board was justified in firing the teacher.
Also, if the board hadn't fired the teacher, what would have happened to
local support for public education?
