subject: WIN95 Echo Rules

(NB: 1:18/200 is posting these rules as a favor to the moderator who is
no longer running a netmailable BBS system.)

These are the rules for the WIN95 conference.

This echo is intended for civilized, mature discussion.
Personal attacks and vilification are not permitted.

             General nature of the echo:

1) The topic of this echo is the Windows operating system. Please try
to keep all discussions on that topic. Some limited discussion of
hardware problems as they relate to Windows is acceptable. Over
the years, the focus has changed, so some off-topic messages are
acceptable, but keep a decent limit on them.

2) All discussions shall be of a technical nature only.

3) No "My-Widget-Can-Beat-Your-Widget" messages.

4) Departures from the above will be considered annoying behavior.

             Tone of the echo:

1) This is supposed to be a friendly area, so please treat others
with respect. This is a mandatory requirement for all.

2) Profanity is unnecessary - please avoid using it. Check your
    flamethrower at the door.

3) Humour is encouraged. Nastiness masquerading as humour
    will be considered annoying behavior.

4) Use of emoticons (smileys and such) are encouraged, in order
to clarify places where humour, sarcasm and such are used.

7) Be slow to respond to messages that anger you. If you really
want to call someone names, take it to netmail.

8) Be quick to help and encourage other participants.

             Message content:

1) Use your *REAL* Name only! If all else fails sign your real name
at the end of your message. This may be waived by prior consultation
with the moderators if you can send a convincing explanation via
    netmail.

2) Stay on topic. No discussions of other operating systems or general
    hardware problems, no buying/selling/trading/pirating/enslaving/bartering
    in the Windows95 echo.

3) Discussions of hardware issues related to Windows95 are acceptable.
    Non-related hardware discussions are off-topic.

4) High-bit ASCII characters are not allowed.

5) Minimize your quoting -- Help stamp out QUOTAHOLISM!
Along those same lines, avoid multi-line signatures and other space
wasters. However, do quote enough that we will know what you are
responding to -- a collection of "Huh, what are you talking about"
    messages also waste space.

6) Try to make the subject of your message bear some relationship to
what you are talking about. If you change the topic, change the
    subject to reflect this.

7) No discussion of illegal activities, this should be obvious.

8) No test messages; no responses to test messages except from
the moderators. There are local message areas where testing is
appropriate, so don't test in the Windows95 echo.

9) No responses to off-topic messages or flames, except from the
moderators. Leave the moderating of this echo to the moderators,
it's what we get paid the big bucks to handle. ;-)

11) If you wish to challenge a moderator's decision, do so via
    netmail only.

change, please send your message via email to alan{at}zisman.ca.
