It sounds as if dial tone detection is failing, and the software is
assuming that there is an incoming call and is attempting to answer the
non-existant call.

Try using X3 in the dial string for fax operation if that is possible.

I have used the Multi-tech MT2834ZDX, but haven't experienced dial-tone
detection failure and haven't used the Multiexpress software.
