I saw something that may be of interest to you. It's been a couple of
months and I didn't save the link. However, someone had proposed using
fiber shipping containers to make a telescope tube. These containers are
cylindrical barrels with metal banding around the top and bottom. The lid
is held on by a seperate metal ring which clamps around the upper metal
ring on the barrel thus providing a possible means to clamp two barrels
together. The poster said these containers could be readily purchased and
at very reasonable prices.
