I just finished reading Seymour Hersh's "The Target Is Destroyed", about the USSR shootdown of KAL Flight 007 in 1983. The book was published in 1986; here's a paragraph I found interesting, from the closing chapters: ===== American rhetoric did not lead to the loss of innocent lives, and the poor performance of the American intelligence community and the White House cannot diminish the international significance of the Soviet mistake over Sakhalin. Nontheless, there is much for Americans to learn from the incident and its aftermath. The exaggerations and distortions of what was known about the destruction of Flight 007 demonstrate that there is no intelligence agency in the United States government that can be counted on to challenge the views of the president and his senior advisors. A tragic and brutal Soviet mistake-- never acknowledged by Moscow-- was escalated into a tinderbox issue on the basis of misunderstood and distorted intelligence, while the NSA, which knew better, chose not to tell others in the government what they didn't want to hear. ===== -- Steve http://www.qmss.com/sewing --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
